My Fav Software
Here is a list of my favorite software. The list ranges from the operating systems to commercial software and open source stuff. People many times ask me, “so what software do you use?” - here it is.
Anti-Virus - AVG 8.0 Free. AVG Free is light weight compare to many heavy $$$ virus checkers and plugs into MS Outlook to scan for email borne viruses. I have tried many anti-virus packages (including MS OneCare) and I keep coming back to AVG.
Password - Password Safe - It is life saver. Being in the security field for years and still security minded I have lots of passwords. So I have this utility keep all my passwords safe for me. Plus the data file it creates is backed up in various places.
Operating System - I have Linux, OS/X and Windows running on various computers at home, but for my main day to day computer I have Vista x64. I like Vista more I use it.
Network Firewall - Instead of a hardware router like a Linksys or DLink I have an old Pentium 433 running a Linux distro called IPCop. IPCop been running for 3 years protecting my home network with no issues.
MS Office 2007 -I tried OpenOffice for 3 months and switched back to MS Office. Nothing beats MS Outlook and Word and Excel in Office 2007. I like the ribbon bar.
Notes - I tried MS OneNote but did not like it. The Sean Mcgrath suggested Evernote. I like it better than OneNote and it syncs with a server so all your Evernote notebooks with all your computers. It runs on Windows, Mac and iPhone (and syncs between them all). It is one of my new favorite applications. If you go to lots of meetings and take lots of notes, Evernote is great.
CD/DVD Burning - DeepBurner - Hands down the lightest, quickest, easiest CD/DVD burning utility. Just like anti-virus programs, CD/DVD software has got bloated. DeepBurner fights bloat. Lean and mean!
File Compression - 7Zip for Windows - I like it better than the built in compressed folder. Allows better compression than 7zip and great password options if you need them.
More later….
